Hey Guys,

During Thanksgiving weekend many of us weren’t watching the news, but Open AI is making moves and here are two new ones I noticed that I think are salient.

Harvey; the “Copilot for Lawyers”

Harvey is some kind of a startup building what it describes as a “copilot for lawyers,” emerged from stealth on November 23rd, 2022 with $5 million in funding led by the OpenAI Startup Fund, the tranche through which OpenAI and its partners are investing in early-stage AI companies tackling major problems.

Also participating in the round was Jeff Dean, the lead of Google AI, and Mixer Labs co-founder Elad Gil, among other angel backers.

Speak

Speak is a speaking app that actually talks. It’s an English language learning platform with AI-powered features, announced on November 17th, 2022 that it raised $27 million in a Series B funding round led by the OpenAI Startup Fund, with participation from Lachy Groom (of Stripe), Josh Buckley, Justin Mateen, Gokul Rajaram and Founders Fund. Notably, Speak is the third startup in which OpenAI, the AI lab closely aligned with Microsoft, has publicly invested through its fund — the others being Descript and Mem.
