Perplexity AI Secures $70 Million Funding Round, Valued at $520 Million

Hey Everyone,

About a week ago, SoftBank Group's Vision Fund 2 said it’s investing in U.S. artificial intelligence startup Perplexity AI at a $3 billion (¥481.4 billion) valuation, Masayoshi Son's latest bet on a sector he deems crucial to securing his legacy. This is actually a big deal, as OpenAI is expected to launch its own web search product that would compete with Perplexity directly.

Recently there’s been a media campaign to discredit Perplexity run by the likes of Forbes and Wired. Who do you suppose is behind it?

It was just in April that Perplexity raised an additional $250M+ at a $2.5B-$3B valuation. On July 2nd, 2024 Perplexity updated its Perplexity Pro.

Perplexity’s product is a generative AI-based search engine that provides results using a chatbot-style interface - but in a world of Google deteriorating, it’s becoming a slightly more attractive proposition for some white collar and fringe workers.

These search bots are getting a lot better, it’s not just Perplexity. Genspark, You dot com, the Acr browser, all have their uses and advantages.
