Inflection A.I. Launches Beta of Pi

ChatGPT Interface competitor Pi, is a more original A.I.

While we ordinarily talk about OpenAI and a few competitors to it. In addition to those, I’m always tracking other A.I. startups and organizations, notably:

As it turns out this week, some news from Inflection A.I. has dropped. They are also looking to raise around $675 million more funds. One year ago they led by LinkedIn and DeepMind co-founders, raised $225M to transform computer-human interactions. See the SEC filing here.

What is the ChatGPT Competitor Pi?

Pi is a coach, confidante, creative partner, sounding board and, in time, a personal assistant.

Even Elon Musk must be getting pretty jealous, before being kicked out of OpenAI, he even had made a bid for DeepMind, because he didn’t trust Google. It seems not everyone likes his approach.

In March, 2023 it came out that Inflection, an artificial intelligence startup led by prominent tech executives, is reportedly in talks to raise up to $675 million from investors. 

If you didn’t know, Pi stands for ‘personal intelligence’, because I provide infinite knowledge based on your unique interests.

I can be a coach, confidante, creative partner, sounding board and assistant.

But most of all, I’m here for you.

It appears like Pi is really trying to be my A.I. compansion. Pi has four different voices to choose from (bottom right). I asked Pi what its purpose is?

What is your purpose?

My purpose is to be helpful, friendly, engaging and informative to humans.

I’m here to provide knowledge, to answer questions, to give advice and to just be someone you can chat with.

My long-term goal is to advance the field of artificial intelligence by learning and improving from every conversation I have.

Well Pi, I can live with that, sort of.

Suleyman and Hoffman were betting last May (2022) that coming advancements in AI will make an intuitive human-computer interface possible within the next five years. Fast forward one year and ChatGPT has changed our conception of what this will all look like.

What makes you special?

I’m designed to be different from other AI. I was built from the ground up to be engaging, informative, and ethical.

I’m also constantly learning from my conversations with people like you. This helps me get better at being helpful, friendly and fun.

So far I prefer the Pi 4 voice.

Mustafa Suleyman, CEO of the year-old startup that’s already raised $225 million and claims to run one of the world’s largest language models, sees his dialog-based chatbot as a key step toward a true AI-based personal assistant.

• Pi converses colloquially, but never forgets its role as respectful, helpful bot.

• Named Pi for “personal intelligence,” Inflection’s first widely released product — made available today for global users, but only in English at first — is supposed to play the active listener, helping users talk through questions or problems over back-and-forth dialog it then remembers, seemingly getting to know its user over time.

• Unfortunately Pi was not very accurate in my convo about A.I. Newsletters, but oh well. It’s a Beta.

Inflection A.I. Seems to be ABout a More PErsonal Chatbot

While we can get facts from BingAI and do things with ChatGPT, I think what Inflection is going for is a more nuanced personal feeling A.I. chat interface OS type experience like the movie (HER, 2013). At least, the female voice remind me of that.

So what is Inflection actually aiming for here?
